Jim Geeks Out Over Digital Marketing

Twice a year we send our Strategy & Digital Lead, Jimmy Merritello, back to high school. Elk Grove High School’s Business Incubator Entrepreneurship program, created in 2014, brings experienced business leaders into the classroom to share their wisdom with entrepreneurial high schoolers. Jim plays teacher for the day, leveraging his expertise in digital marketing strategy to inspire and guide students through the process of promoting and growing their own businesses online.

Students in the program actually build and operate their own start-ups. The class just finished developing websites with easy to use platforms such as Squarespace and Weebly. With the buzz of newly built sites in the air, Jim taught the young entrepreneurs how to optimize their online presence.

His lesson gave students actionable steps towards building and executing a digital marketing strategy. His talking points included:

  • Define your goals for marketing
  • Define how your business model plays with the web – It’s different for all
  • Find out where your audience (or potential audience) hangs out
    • Consumer: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
    • Business to Business: LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
    • Google Search? Gmail Inbox?
  • Test the waters on tactics
  • Put together a plan
  • Execute the plan
